9-11: Artists Respond. Two volumes which feature short pieces by various graphic novel artists and writers. A must for all libraries.

Arnoldi, Katherine. The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom. An inspirational and poignant pictorial memoir that chronicles a teenage mother's difficult education.

Chadwick, Paul. Concrete: Think Like a Mountain. Concrete is a superhero hard of body, but not of heart.

Claremont, Chris. X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga. When one of the X-Men is transformed into one of the most powerful beings in the universe, tragedy seems inevitable

Clowes, Daniel. Ghost World. Enid and Rebecca seem to be living in limbo after graduating from high school.

Dixon, Chuck. The Hobbit: An Illustrated Edition of the Fantasy Classic. Great for reluctant readers, this beautifully illustrated version draws the reader in to Tolkien's fantasy world.

Fujishima, Kosuke. Oh My Goddess! Series about a lonely teenage boy spending another Friday night alone, orders a pizza, and ends up reaching the Goddess Technical Help Line!

Gonick, Larry. The Cartoon History of the Universe. Now covering through the Renaissance, these provide clear information using the visual orientation and a humorous approach. Volume 1-From the Big Bang to Alexander the Great; Volume 2-From the Springtime of China to the Fall of Rome; Volume 3-From the Rise of Arabia to the Renaissance.

Kubert, Joe. Fax from Sarajevo. Based on faxes sent from war-torn Bosnia.

Miller, Frank. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Batman returns from retirement to same Gotham City from gang warfare and his evil enemy, the Joker. Two volumes.

Moore, Alan. Watchmen. In this fantasy world, Richard Nixon was never impeached and superheroes were outlawed. Lesser vigilantes come out of hidiing and humanity must face the result.

Moore, Terry. Strangers in Paradise. Katchoo, Francine and David are best friends facing confusing times.

Nakazawa, Keiji. Barefoot Gen: A Cartoon Story of Hiroshima. The clear cartoons in this trilogy convey an important event in history in a very accessible format.

Pini, Richard and Wendy. Elfquest series. A race of elves search for their homeland. A fantasy theme combined with adventure, suspense and humor. This is an ongoing series.

Smith, Jeff. The Complete Bone Adventures. Bone is one of the most popular non-superhero comics to come along in years. An ongoing series for all ages.

Spiegelman, Art. Maus and Maus II. Pulitzer prize winning story of Spiegelman's father and his struggle to survive concentration camps during World War II, then the trials of his parents as they build a life in America.

Takahashi, Rumiko. Ranma ½. Ongoing adventures, trials and tribulations of a girl who is really a boy and his/her panda. One of the most popular series in public libraries.

Takeuchi, Naoka. Sailor Moon. Series chronicles the efforts of Sailor Moon, the champion of love and justice, battling for the safety of the universe

Talbot, Bryan. The Tale of One Bad Rat. A young girl's journey to recovery after being sexually abused by her father.

Toriyama, Akira. Dragonball Z. This is currently one of the hottest anime shows on TV, especially for pre-teen and young teenage boys. This series is printed in the traditional Japanese left-to-right format.

Veitch, Tom. Star Wars: Dark Empire. Pick up any graphic novel version of the epic story, the will not be on the shelf long.

Winick, Judd. Pedro and Me: Friendship, Loss and What I Learned. Winick's friend who died of AIDS, Pedro Zamora, was a star of MTV's Real World.
